Manifesto of Silences is a bold, Deaf-led reimagining of opera directed by Irene Holub. Blending sign language opera, movement, projection, and immersive sound, the work explores the decisions upon the lives of Deaf people impacting their identity and language through a rich, multilayered visual landscape, it brings silenced histories to life—inviting audiences into a powerful, emotionally resonant experience.
We are deeply proud of what we were able to share Manifesto of Silences with audiences at the ArtsHouse last week. The season sold out, and the feedback – both emotional and critical – has been extraordinary.
We were moved to hear how profoundly the work resonated with people. The story of language and cultural suppression experienced by Deaf communities in Australia and around the world is rarely given space at this scale. To see audiences respond with such care, curiosity and recognition affirmed the importance of telling this history through Deaf creative leadership.
We believe Manifesto of Silences has set a new precedent in the arts: a Deaf‑led mainstage work that centres creative agency in the hands of those who have lived these histories and their contemporary impacts. Presenting an operatic work entirely in signed and visual language is also a first for the sector, and the overwhelmingly positive response has started new conversations – not only about artistic form, but about the lived experience of Deaf people navigating an inaccessible world.
